Advent Day 20: God-Bearer

“Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed, because the Mighty One has done great things for me, and his name is holy.”

‭‭

Luke‬ ‭1:48-49‬ ‭CSB‬‬

The great things that the Mighty One did for Mary were great things for all people. When He looked with favor upon her as His servant, He blessed the entire human race. And so all generations will call her blessed because she willingly accepted the angel’s charge—to conceive and to carry our Savior—so that “the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35).

In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, the Greek word associated with Mary is Theotokos or “God-bearer.” And so, on one hand, the humble details of our Lord’s birth continue to amaze—we behold God, the Mighty One…in a feeding trough!!

On another hand, though, as we deepen in our understanding of our Lord’s humility, we see how a baby, born of a virgin, wrapped tightly in cloths, and lying in a manger is the perfect sign of His deliverance. For retaining full divinity was required to to save the world. And becoming human flesh was the only way to win human hearts.
