Our Lord’s mercy, His compassion, is at the heart of the Advent season, the Christmas story, and the gospel overall. He is for those who are hurting and heartbroken and wants to see them lifted up and healed. Mary is aware of this and seems to bring this truth out as a theme in her praise.
We too can join in this refrain and rejoice in our Lord’s tenderness towards us “from generation to generation”!
Are there areas in our lives where we are particularly feeling condemned? Perhaps even areas that seem to run in our families? Let us remember that Mary’s baby is going to become a man who will be executed, in part, for lavishing mercy upon many whom society had written off and judged. And let us look into the eyes of this Child and receive the very mercy that led Him to willingly, vulnerably, and Iovingly join Himself to us forever.
